Not a good photo today, but rather one of interest. Ever wonder why this bird is called a Longclaw?
This is the first time I have managed to take a photo that shows the claws.
Unfortunately it was quite late, the light was not good and it resulted in a grainy photo
This is a Yellow Throated Longclaw - there are also Orange throats and others with Pink throats.

I love the Afrikaans name: "Geelkeelkalkoentjie"

  1. Long claws are camouflaged by the thorns! I wonder what its prey is that it needs those long claws...

  2. Celia. I copied the following from the Biodiversity explorer:

It mainly eats insects and other invertebrates, doing most of its foraging on the ground, plucking food from grass and occasionally hawking prey aerially. The following food items have been recorded in its diet:
    Invertebrates
    insects
    grasshoppers (Orthoptera)
    moths (Lepidoptera)
    Coleoptera (beetles)
    mantids
    ants
    millipedes
    molluscs
