 Today I found this cocoon on the dry stalk of a dead fern frond.

There is a larva in it, but I have no way of telling whether is is still alive.

It is only about 15 mm in length and covered with some sort of fiber held together with strands of silk. It would be very interesting to see what emerges from it - I will be watching it every day!

Brown Hooded Kingfisher

This looks like an immature bird - perhaps waiting for Mother to bring it some food?

This photo was taken on 23 June while we were waiting at False Bay Park for the 

Super Moon to rise.  The sun had was already quite low, and only the Gulls that were 

flying high enough were touched by the beautiful orange light.
