A Death's Head Hawk Moth (Acherontia atropos) Amazing skull on back of it's thorax!
I have never seen one of these before and had to Google it to get the name.
Also found out that "when threatened, they make a squealing sound, like a mouse.
The moths have a 5 inch wingspan and are fond of honey and invade beehives."
Google also showed that the beautiful Caterpillars that I photographed on
28 October last year, are of this moth.

  1. How remarkable that that pretty caterpillar and sinister-looking moth are associated! Amazing captures.

  2. The world of nature is much like our world. We start life crawling around on the floor, grow up and spread our wings and become a businessman or perhaps a politician, we might own a bunch of media outlets, then suck the honey out of bee hives. Interesting how life evolves. Death’s Head Hawk Moth… they look attractive at time and other times not so pretty.

  3. The colours on the wings look almost like feathers.. Quite amazing!

I like the "psychedelic" worms too.. Interesting that the two are quite different! One yellow and one green.. I wonder if age, or sex has anything to do with it..

  4. Fabulous picture Maggie. He/She looks like he/she is so sort and silky. I too have seen those caterpillars so it is good to be able to link them with the moth.
