Pat's Cat
This beautiful cat arrived at the boarding school's gate one morning.
Being a cat lover, my friend Pat decided to call it 'Dumper' because we were all under the impression that it had been dumped here by people that had moved and wanted to make sure that it would be fed.
(In our home language a boarding school is called a 'koshuis'  which means 'food house')
Needless to say Dumper literally landed with its butt in the butter - a very happy cat!
Dumper is loved by all and loves everybody in return - a very thankful cat indeed!
A few months ago someone arrived to do window repairs and said it was his cat but  that his dogs kept chasing it. Clever kitty  to move out and find its way to a new and loving 'food house'!

The first image is the original photo - the other four are various crops of the original.
Quite amazing what you can do with one photo!

Thrilled to find this insect hanging on a leaf, I knelt down and very carefully moved the camera in on it.
It did not move, so I went it even closer

Then I decided to carefully turn the leaf over to maybe get a better shot of it.
Much to my surprise there was no Cicada - just an empty exoskeleton!

The Guava tree is in bloom.I find it strange that there isn't a bee to be seen around all those stamens!

Perfect camouflage!
What I thought to be a lacewing doesn't look like any other lacewing I can find online.
Lacewings have straight 'clubbed' antennae while this one's seem to be segmented
One of my colleagues at school is an Entomologist - I will send her a link and ask for an ID

Merry Christmas
A natural little 'Christmas Tree' in my garden - baubles and all!
We had some welcome rain this morning and it seemed that it might be a cooler day.
The day changed dramatically once the sun came out and it was steaming hot!
I hope you had a joyous day surrounded by family and friends.

After all the rain we had earlier this month we have experienced very hot and windy weather.
The garden seemed thankful today for the sprayer
I would like to wish all the blog viewers, friends and family in other countries where it is already Christmas,
every Blessing that you wish for yourself.

Bees are frequenting every available flower in my garden and today I discovered that they were nesting in the corner of the yard in the water drain that is fed by the rain water run off in the guttering around the garage. I really don't mind them and fortunately it is a part of the back garden that is not accessible to my dogs.
This photo was taken with my camera on a tripod on the front porch, zoomed in on the flower that was about 10 mt away. We had such a lovely clear day today - blue skies all around with the moon still visible quite high above the trees after 8am this morning.
This plant was given to me as a "miniature ornamental" from a friend's rockery and I planted it in a pot.
When I moved into the house where I live now it had outgrown the pot so I planted it against the fence in the front  of the house.  I did not realise at the time that it would turn into a monster!
The Prickly Pear has thrived with the recent rain and is now as high as the guttering of the house.
This morning I drilled into the stem and injected herbicide into the holes in the hope that it would
die off and dry out so that it can be removed and burned.
After all this effort I found out this afternoon that the herbicide I used does not kill cacti :(
Locally, the herbicide that is used to kill cacti is only available in 20 lt drums,
which means I will have to try and source a small quantity elsewhere - perhaps from a local farmer who has bought a drum of the stuff!
The plant cannot be removed before it is dead because it is very invasive - even the smallest piece that breaks off will sprout roots where it falls and turn into a monster-in-the-making.
(This plant saga somehow reminds me of the 1960's movie "The little Shop of Horrors" - hopefully I won't have to kill to feed it !)

Passion Flowers - bees are passionate about them.
Last year the Grenadilla vine did not produce much fruit but this year it seems over eager.
The fruit are just about ready to ripen while the next batch is already being pollinated.

An afternoon in the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park
Despite the heat we saw Rhino, Giraffe, Zebra, Warthog, Impala, Baboons and Monkeys.
The 'moment of the day' was when this Water Monitor emerged from the grass to cross the road!
It gave us a nasty look and disappeared back into the long grass

We took a quick drive to False Bay Park (part of the Isimangaliso Wetlands)
It is so pleasing to see the abundant bird life after the lake had been dry for so many years. I did a major hunt in my photo archive and bring you a story where no words are necessary!
The photo above shows how windy it was and the birds congregated around the other side
of the bay that was sheltered from the wind
A variety of Cormorant, Pelican, Seagull, Flamingo, Sandpiper, Egret, Heron, Thick Knee, Tern and many other smaller birds within a few hundred meters!
We are all very thankful that the lake has filled up again and is back to its former glory.
My mother who will be 87 in January spent many happy hours fishing at the lake 'back in the day'
When the lake dried up she used to say that she wonders if she will ever see the lake full again.
I am especially thankful that Mom can witness the beauty once more.
Hopefully we will soon have a less windy day so that I can take her fishing again.

This photo of a green Stinkbug appeared on this blog earlier this year.
While searching for a specific photo for someone, I came across it and decided it deserves to be posted again - amazing colour combinations and such a comical face!

This Jumping Spider made a run for it before I could get another photo.

This is the first year that the "Daisy" Bush (unidentified) has flowered in abundance.
I found it rather strange that there were very little insects to be seen
The early morning light was not good though because it was overcast.

Not a camera taken out of a bag today!
I have rummaged through my photos and decided to post a collection of my favourite bird photos.
My apologies if I have perhaps previously posted any of these photos.

Every time I pointed the camera at this little dog, she would pull her ears back and stare at me with THOSE eyes and that expression!  What was she thinking? Do dogs think?
Was she unhappy about the camera or just posing for the shot?
She is a Jack Russel cross Pug - a cross breed often referred to as a "Jug" ;)

Don't you just hate it when you Google something and cannot find an answer?
Despite trying all sorts of phrases and wording to find the name of this moth it is still labelled as an "antenna-combed-moth"!
A closer look at the 'combs'
Quite amazing the way the combs neatly tuck together.

Although this fly does not have an official common name, it is referred to as a Signal Fly
The above link suggests that it looks like a Buzzard and could easily be called
a Buzzard Signal Fly
These flies are said to be quite common but this is the first time in four years of insect 'shooting'
that I have seen one.

Freshly spray painted and polished ;)

While sitting at my desk I noticed a baby Gecko scrambling up the paper that is set in my printer.
I reached for the camera and the little creature stopped briefly to glance back before it disappeared behind the pack of paper.  Geckos babies are very cute - until they start messing on the walls.
The joys of living in the country make up for having to put up with geckos, mosquito's and frogs....
Oh, and snakes, and ants and termites and scorpions - I think I can live with the rest!

This guy had obviously finished his meal and was resting - not minding the camera at all.
Jon Bon Jovi's song "a Bed of Roses" springs to mind!

This plant reminds me of the Christ Thorn, the flowers are similar but bigger and it has a
spiky stem as opposed to a thorny one of the Christ Thorn.
The cream flowers have a pink edging and so do the leaves.
Unfortunately we don't know what this plant is called.

The wet weather has certainly brought new life everywhere!
Fungi is found in various forms and are in abundance.

This bright orange fungus is growing on a treated pole. I did not think anything with grow on a pole that has been treated with creosote. Unless of course the creosote is not what it used to be....

Mushrooms are growing all around this dead tree stump.
They have even sprung up on the lawn following the pattern where the roots of the tree are.

Growing through the stone crush in the parking area at school.

An Earth ball has also made its way through the stone!

Cleaned out the fridge and found a small plastic dish with a piece of forgotten Cheddar cheese that had gone all moldy. As I was about to chuck it in the bin I decide to first take a few macro shots.
